A summary of the meeting of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority in September 2000

At this meeting the Authority discussed the Government's recent announcement in response to the Donaldson Report on Cloning and the McLean Report on Consent. The Authority finalised egg sharing guidance for centres and agreed it should be distributed. The Authority was informed that the Chairman would remain for a further 18 month term. The Authority thanked the departing Chief Executive, Suzanne McCarthy for her work over the preceding four years and welcomed Hugh Whittall as Acting Chief Executive.

The Authority discussed the testing of embryos for aneuploidy and will continue to consider this issue in future meetings.

Members noted written reports from the following committees and working group: the Code of Practice Committee; the Working Group on New Developments in Reproductive Technology (WGNRT).
