March 2000

A summary of the meeting of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority in March 2000

At this meeting Members noted the appointment of a new Chairman at the end of 2000, the receipt of the Treasury and Department of Health's agreement to the introduction of new fee levels and the second Quinquennial Review of the Authority.

Building on earlier decisions taken, the Authority at this meeting agreed a second set of inspection protocols including the protocols for inspecting patient information. The use of such protocols, the Authority noted, would give further assurance of consistent and rigorous inspections of licensed centres.

In addition, the Authority also decided that standard conditions should be imposed on those centres wishing to be licensed for the storage and/or use of frozen eggs. A patient information leaflet explaining the risks and likelihood of success of such procedures was also approved.

Members noted the project being taken forward by the Department of Health to establish standards and inspect all facilities that stored human tissue, and considered this development in light of its own remit and operations. Further discussions were planned with the Department regarding the inspection of storage of ovarian and testicular tissue.
