February 2000

A summary of the meeting of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority in February 2000

At this meeting the Authority was notified that the 2000 Annual Conference would take place on Tuesday, 5th December at Regents College, London.

The Chairman reported on the first meeting of the Human Genetics Commission which she had attended. Members were also advised of discussions between the Chief Executive and Department of Health officials regarding the HFEA's three year budget for the period 2001/04 and the continuation of the 70/30 income split over that period. Members were also informed by the Chief Executive of preparations being made for the Authority's Second Quinquennial Review.

At this meeting the Authority approved the HFEA's Corporate/Business Plan and its 2000/01 budget. Also discussed were the British Andrology Society's 1999 Guidelines for the recruitment and screening of sperm donors and the Human Fertilisation and Embryology (Statutory Storage Period) Regulations 1991.

Written reports were received from the following committees and working groups: Organisation and Finance Committee; the Audit Committee; the Working Group on New Developments in Reproductive Technology (WGNDRT); and the Licensing and Fees Committee. The WGNDRT's conclusions regarding the use of fragment removal in assisted hatching were considered, and Members agreed that there was insufficient evidence demonstrating the safety and efficacy of that technique.
