January 2000
A summary of the meeting of The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority in January 2000
At this meeting the Authority discussed the regulation of human tissue storage and the RCOG's Report of the Working Party on Storage of Ovarian and Prepubertal Testicular Tissue. The Authority also received reports about the December meeting between representatives of the BFS, RCOG and the HFEA.
The Authority approved an ICSI leaflet, Chairman's Letters to clinics on the screening of gamete and embryo donors and the storage of sperm for vasectomy patients and the third issue of the HFEA Update.
The Authority also discussed the introduction of inspection protocols. The introduction of these protocols was a part of the redesign of the inspection and licensing system. These protocols would ensure that inspections were conducted rigorously and with consistency.
Finally, it was reported that the WGNDRT had considered fragment removal in connection with assisted hatching and concluded that, while there was no evidence to suggest that this procedure was beneficial, there was some evidence to suggest it caused damage. The WGNDRT had therefore decided not to recommend this procedure.
