Dear Colleague

Re: 2003 Patients' Guides

Due to the ongoing HFEA data register replacement project, we are currently unable to produce validated data extractions for clinic outcomes. The HFEA has therefore carefully considered the range of options available for producing the 2003 Patients' Guides and has decided not to ask clinics to provide their own outcome data for a second year running. Clinic outcome data will therefore not be included in this year's publication. It is recognised that this will change the nature of the guide for this one year. The publication for 2003 will be renamed the HFEA Directory of Clinics and will consist of more detailed information about clinics and services.

The HFEA is consulting with a range of stakeholders as to how the clinic outcome data can be presented in the future to ensure that it is accessible for patients. This will inform the 2004 Patients' Guide.

The HFEA Directory of Clinics is being produced using the expertise and services of Dr Foster (the organisation which produces patient guides for health services) who has a wealth of experience in analysing and presenting information for the public.

Part one of the new Clinic Directory will replace the previous HFEA publication the ´Patients' Guide to Infertility and IVF'. It will consist of general information about infertility, choosing a clinic and available treatments, in a question and answer format. Part two of the Clinic Directory will contain the clinic information and will replace the ´Patients Guide to IVF Clinics' and the ´Patients' Guide to Donor Insemination'.

In order to provide us with information about your clinic for part two of the Directory, I would ask that you complete and return the enclosed questionnaire by Monday 20 October. The questionnaire also contains other information held by the HFEA about your clinic which we are sending for verification. This information will be used to update our internal systems and information published on our website where appropriate.
